She tragically dies from an unknown virus (presumably HIV) at the end of the film.

She has big dreams of becoming a famous folk singer and follows her free-spirited heart far away from Greenbow, becoming a hippie and then a druggie disco dancer, until she finally settles down and heals from years of addiction.

She also struggles with being raised in a household where her father sexually abuses her. She is very kind to Forrest and encourages him to protect himself from the bullies at their school. Jenny Curran is Forrest's only friend from childhood, a beautiful girl with a troubled biography. After he dies during the Vietnam War, Forrest becomes determined to buy a shrimping boat in Bubba's honor. Bubba is a black man from the bayou whose one true dream is to have a shrimping boat. Benjamin Buford 'Bubba' Blueīenjamin Buford 'Bubba' Blue is Forrest's best friend from his time in the military. He is devoted to her and wants to protect her from danger, even though she struggles with some horrible demons. Forrest is gentle and kindhearted, showing affection and love to his childhood friend, Jenny Curran. His mental limitations are often charming to the people around him, and he finds himself accidentally in historically significant situations time and time again, from the integration of the University of Alabama to the night of the Watergate scandal. While there is much on-target humor here, Groom, author of Better Times Than These, has written better books than this.Forrest Gump is the protagonist, a mentally and physically challenged young man, whose mother raised him to believe that he is no different than anyone else. All this takes place after Gump has met Lyndon Johnson and saved Chairman Mao from drowning, which is to say that this is a very broad satire. Instead, he is a mathematical idiot savant, capable of outperforming NASA's on-board computers, which is why Gump ends up on a space mission with an ape and the first woman astronauta mission that ends in the forests of New Guinea where Gump meets a Yale-tutored cannibal.

Like most literary idiots, Forrest Gump is a lot smarter than the people he encounters.

Groom's picaresque tale is told by an idiot, the Gump of the title, and follows his outrageous life from early stardom for Bear Bryant's Crimson Tide, through a tour in Vietnam and across the broad canvas of America during the '70s and '80s. There is a joyously madcap feeling to the first half of this unusual novel, but then the absurdity gathers its own speed and begins to run dangerously amok.
